Analysis of The Shining

The Shining

CameraWork

The camerawork in this is all filmed from a helicopter which gives the effect as if someone is following the car. It begins with an extreme long shot which in effect shows to us as an audience where abouts they are and really sets begins to set the scene. The main focus in this introduction is clearly the car as we follow it throughout the whole introduction, this helps build up a feeling that they are being followed by something. The car is always driving away from the camera which gives the effect its driving away from us into the isolated scene.

Editing

The editing in this opening sequence is very minimal, I believe this is because back in 1980 there wasn't programs like adobe premier. But the editor has made good use of the little editing he has done. In this introduction the transitions used are very sharp and quick, This may signify how quickly the changes in events will happen during the film.

Sound

The music in this opening sequence is very eerie and has an extremely eerie vibe too it which helps set the scene for a horror film but on the other hand the video is extremely peaceful and without the music it wouldn't be scary at all. The music seems to echo which contrasts to the surroundings and is almost like reverb to where about it  is being shot.

Mise en scene

The place where the shots are being taken seem deserted and isolated and there is no one around accept the car. Isolation is a huge key theme in The Shining and the wide shots with nothing but the car in sight help back that up and this makes the audience get ready and start to build tension. The only prop in this is the yellow car. Yellow cars are something rare maybe this links up to characters and how rare they are.
